Португальские сонеты VII, из Рильке

VII.

Я полагаю, мир с другим лицом.

Твоей души чуть слышные шаги,

такие тихие; о как легки,

как вкрадчиво проскальзывали в дом

к погибели моей. И вдруг, как гром,

мне, утопающей, любовь дана

и в новых ритмах жизнь моя слышна.

Однажды жадно, за один приём

из кубка причащения пила,

хвалила: Сладкий, сладок, близок ты –

Исчезло небо, родина была

Лишь там, где были милого черты.

Поют амуры: ты в моей судьбе,

а музыка звучит в одном тебе.

VII.

Mir scheint, das Angesicht der Welt verging

in einem andern. Deiner Seele Schritt

war leise neben mir, o leis, und glitt

leis zwischen mich und das was niederhing

in meinen Tod. Auf einmal fing -

- da ich schon sinkend war - mich Liebe auf,

und ein ganz neuer Rhythmus stieg hinauf

mit mir ins Leben. Den ich einst empfing,

den Taufkelch voller Leid, ich trink ihn gern

und preis ihn, Süßer, süß, bist du nur nah.

Die Namen: Heimat, Himmel schwanden fern,

nur wo du bist, entsteht ein Ort. Und da:

dies Saitenspiel (die Engel wissen wie

geliebt) hat nur in dir noch Melodie.

Since first I heard the footsteps of thy soul

Move still, oh, still, beside me, as they stole

Of life in a new rhythm. The cup of dole

God gave for baptism, I am fain to drink,

And praise its sweetness, Sweet, with thee anear.

The names of country, heaven, are changed away

For where thou art or shalt be, there or here;

And this . . . this lute and song . . . loved yesterday,

(The singing angels know) are only dear

Because thy name moves right in what they say.
