Arthur O’Shaughnessy Colibri
Canto the Third

1: Refulgent moment of supreme emotion,
2: Sweetening the earth, swelling the lurid ocean,
3: Making a flagrant painting of the sky,
4: Burdening the soul of things with dumb devotion,
5: Urging the heart of man to speak and die,
6: Speaking then in a bird's despairing cry,
7: Breaking then, agonizing, passing by!

8: So the tremendous evening fades, and night,
9: Like a great noiseless eagle, at one flight
10: Covers the glowing country of the light.

11: Hark how, a mile away, the wild Savannah
12: Wakens and heaves and roars! Inward this road,
13: And then a rush through plantain and banana,
14: And then the forest. Where the strange flower glowed,
15: The giant yellow flower between the trees,
16: The blossom of the dragon-like liana,

17: There she awaits me; there her hands will seize
18: And hold me to the fire of her heart,
19: That wild Brazilian fire, whose diamond dart
20: Makes the small bosom of the humming-bird
21: A coruscation.

21: Who would speak a word
22: Through such transcendant silence? All was done.
23: And once more in the day, beneath the sun,
24: She and I journey, as though two were one.
25: She and I, in a gliding boat of bark,
26: Are going up the mighty Amazon;
27: On either side of us a forest dark
28: With wonders that the light ne'er looked upon,
29: Whence ever here and there some brilliant thing
30: Issues enchanted. Sometimes great trees fling
31: Their tortuous arms across, and endless trails
32: And coils and thongs of leafage and of bloom
33: Hang down and sweep the wave, and scarce leave room,

34: Or stretch their dense impenetrable veils
35: All overhead. And now the waters dream
36: And darken in the shadows where they keep
37: Rich stains of leaf and flower buried deep,
38: In pastures where the feeding fishes gleam,
39: Spangled with suns and stars; and now the stream,
40: Bounding with glossy back beneath some cape,
41: Goes onward like an oscillating snake,
42: Until one midmost rock's unyielding shape
43: Thwarts it, and lo! whole seas of fury break
44: From lashed sides, and the rock and river wage
45: A roaring, endless strife; but slim and swift
46: As the Anhinga bird, we dart or drift,
47: Or hurry through the eddies, and the rage
48: Of the wave's desperate onset far behind
49: Is lost among rich murmurs. Then the noon,
50: In some delicious spot where slowly wind
51: The weakened currents round soft oases,
52: Linked by their joining flowers, allures us soon
53: So overwhelmingly with perfumed breeze,

54: And purple glow and wonderful appeal
55: Of supernatural colours that reveal
56: Strange speechless yearnings of the heart, and steal
57: Into its subtlest communings, that long
58: We linger, feeling what the waters feel,
59: And what the flowers are faint with, and a throng
60: Of passionate thought goes mingling with the song
61: Of low-voiced love-birds, till we join the dream
62: Of all their emerald Eden. Nothing said
63: Around, beneath, or answered overhead,
64: Yet all one soul in one effusion seem
65: The opulent odours, the transcendent gleam,
66: The radiant heights of verdure—the cool gloom,
67: The flowering orgies of unwonted bloom,
68: The love, the thought—one soul, one dream, one doom!
69: Nursed in the noiseless water haunt where night
70: And day are softened, and the liquid light
71: And shallow fawning wastes for ever dwell
72: In unison beneath an amber spell,

73: We watch some burnished miracle of green,
74: Piercing the hollow shade with vivid sheen,
75: The plume-tailed halcyon, with scintillant wing,
76: Sudden and flashing, like a meteor stone;
77: Or gazing upwards, long enamouring
78: Enthralling moments, all that world unknown,
79: That labyrinth of leaves and blossoming,
80: That waving ocean of sonorous day,
81: Where the red palms expand in vast array,
82: And the sun works his wonders, opens deep
83: Surpassing vistas; and enchantments keep,
84: Or visions lure us thitherward in sleep.
85: Unnumbered pass those redolent hours: a trance
86: Of luminous magic lulls the whole expanse
87: Of lovely wilderness. At length a call
88: Comes from the waters; then the clamorous din
89: Of some amphibious host: then aimless fall
90: The spent red arrows of the lurid light
91: Among the tree stems, and a sun akin
92: To flame leaves crimson on the palm-trees' height,
93: And orange on the wave. Then sudden night.

94: This Indian girl came softly to my side,
95: In the resplendent border-land, one noon.
96: I, lingering through the day's luxurious swoon,
97: Communing with colossal sadness hewn
98: In the red sunset, felt her long look steal
99: Into my soul, as some dark glade may feel
100: The sweet insinuation of the light;
101: And when I turned the momentary sight
102: Of her unfaining face touched me with yet
103: One other thing my soul may not forget.
104: Neither shall I forget a long rich hour,
105: Eloquent between pausing sun and moon,
106: The darkening forest and the closing flower
107: Spoke in the silence with an unknown power.
108: She stirred not at my side; but let her cheek
109: Fall in its soft effusion on my breast,
110: The while her long, dark yearning gaze exprest
111: Thoughts wonderful, and things she could not speak.

112: And looking on her face, I saw indeed
113: How inwardly that hour her soul took heed
114: Of love and far-off fate, and life and death,
115: In some great height of sadness, passionate
116: And pensive. And the woodlands' wavering breath
117: Seemed tremulous, because it bore a freight
118: Of unrequited tears. On either hand
119: Brethren and sisters of her tribe did stand,
120: Speechless and saddened; then, a little while,
121: Made farewells fading, and in shadowy file
122: Passed onward through the shadowy forest land,
123: Leaving her there and me; and at her feet
124: Her Indian lover, dying, making sweet
125: His death with gazing on her.

126: Here is our oasis. Slow water-ways
127: Murmur meandering through the golden maze:
128: All the lulled river, like a winding snake,
129: Fondles the flowerage of the bending shores,
130: Glistens half hidden under blooming brake,

131: Or basks in glossy opening. Secret pores
132: Enchant the air with an exhaling scent,
133: And great corollas tossing redolent,
134: Like high-swung censers, lavish a large gift
135: Of magical strange fragrance; while the palms,
136: Rising exuberant, emulously lift
137: Crowned heads surpassing to the exalted calms
138: And luminous heats of high ethereal day.
139: In such an Eden glorious creatures stay,
140: Fearless of foe, and many a nest is made
141: Safe in the blue recesses of the shade,
142: By lazy golden fowl, whose feathers flame
143: Most like the burning phoenix of old fame.

144: Here, when our gliding soft canoe was heard,
145: Failed there a flower or ceased there any bird
146: His lone ecstatic song? The red canes stirred
147: Only with wonted music, shuddering sweet
148: In long unanimous revelry: the wave
149: Fawned on insatiably about their feet;

150: The large leaves met behind us to repave
151: The blossoming path for wading water-hen,
152: And glossy green-billed trampler of the fen.
153: And nothing broke the high beatitude,
154: Harmonious through the one-voiced solitude,
155: Where jubilant birds and scents of dreaming flowers,
156: Poured out rich souls and blended them with ours.

157: And, truly, to be here in this our isle,
158: In the red hour of the sun's last smile,
159: Is fair and full of wonder; for the banks
160: Gleam with a moving splendour; dazzling ranks
161: Of lories, and the parrots manifold,
162: In fluttering glory, crimson, green and gold,
163: Flown banded from the forest hitherward,
164: Dapple with shifting hues the bended sward
165: Down to the wave; or, lighting on some space
166: Of rustling cane and undulating rush,
167: Amaze the forests with their swaying grace,

168: And break the deepening blue with sudden gush
169: And pageantry of colour.

169: Colibri!
170: Yea, let me live for ever here, and see
171: Only the beauty of the place, and thee,
172: Strangest and loveliest. There is some part
173: Of the snake's fascinating soul in thee;
174: 'Twas a surpassing flower that made thy heart
175: Of passionate secrecy, of hues that start
176: And rise and fill the soft depths in thy face,
177: As unknown crimsons formed beneath the wave
178: Expand and fade; and all thy wild swift grace
179: Belongeth to the bird that dims the eye
180: With sunny lightning: whence one name they gave
181: To thee and to the bird.

181: And by-and-by
182: I shall know better all thy mystery.
183: Here thou shalt bind me, and the flowers maybe
184: Shall also bind me for thee day by day,

185: Adding inscrutably some lasting link
186: Of fragrance round my heart; here thou and they,
187: Joining soft league against me, lull away
188: My life to dream a life again, or think
189: In lofty-cadenced rhapsodies that hold
190: The long sonorous winds in worlds of gold,
191: Singing transcendently above the palms.

192: Already I have felt the inward balms,
193: Rich stealing emanations from the deep
194: Unfathomable forest, healing me,
195: O'erwhelming me in an enchanted sleep
196: Of unremembering, buoyant luxury,
197: Whence colour, perfume, sound, on painless wings,
198: Issue immortal in wide liquid thrill
199: Of softest dissolution. Unknown things,
200: Reaching the secret of my kindred sense,
201: Lure me, moreover; so that I fulfil
202: A daily-growing bond with the immense

203: Exuberant solitude; while now the will
204: Of some long-stifled ancient being intense
205: Wakes me to soar forth boundless.

205: Oh, last night,
206: The great voice of the universal soul
207: Seemed to be speaking to me from the height
208: And from the depth, bidding me rise up whole,
209: Blasting my weakness in the scornful roll
210: Of thousand-throated thunder. Every tongue
211: Of fair infuriate creature, gracious, strong,
212: Uttered or roared or sang the frenzied song
213: Of its appalling self, that once more flung
214: A loud defiance through the fearless night,
215: Great and without a grief. And I, like one
216: Roused by some vast resuscitating voice
217: From death's drugged lethargy, watched with delight,
218: Against the jagged blue, the faultless poise
219: And sheer intrepid leap or violent run
220: Of ounce or jaguar—hearkening while the noise
221: Of all that hurricane of life and strife
222: Roared and rolled on terrific through the leagues
223: Of shaken woodland, till a loftier life
224: Of great primeval passions and fatigues
225: Rose and grew mine—a long exuberant breath
226: Of pauseless life to end in dreamless death.

From “Songs of a Worker”, 1881.
