Arthur O’Shaughnessy An Epic of Women VII. TROTH FOR ETERNITY-3
210-312

210: I am clasped
211: With such arms as I would might hold me so
212: For evermore in heaven. All around,
213: The strange unearthly fragrance of her hair
214: Is coming up, and, with an element
215: Divine as some transparent rosy cloud,
216: Enwrapping both of us; ay, and, as though—
217: A very cloud of magic—it had borne

218: Us, lifted far away from thought, and life,
219: And days, and earthliness—we seem to voyage
220: Through most ethereal atmospheres, and seas
221: Upon whose soft sustaining waves we drift,
222: And draw no sound from either distant shore
223: Of ending or beginning: and the bliss,
224: Unspeakable and perfect, that we feel
225: Seems making and remaking evermore
226: Our souls through this eternity.

226: Alas!
227: One little thread—I strive in vain to break—
228: Is holding me: a memory, a thought,
229: The pricking of a half-numbed wound through sleep,
230: The constant teazing of a winged thing,
231: The bitterness wherewith some ceaseless fang
232: Of life gnaws through, and breaks our dream of it—
233: Some such pursues and racks me. But 'tis well:
234: I know the dream is mine to make my own;
235: I know what dragon guards this paradise,
236: And with what paltry lies he fools mankind.
237: Ah, how the universe must jeer to see

238: All men so smoothly cheated of their own!—
239: And when I slay this dragon, I have all.

240: I cannot stir now. Many a knotted tress
241: Is on me, like a thousand-threaded chain
242: Twined many times about my limbs. I dream
243: No more: I feel her small and gliding hands
244: Seek mine; and while the burning rapid words
245: Her full heart furnishes hiss in mine ear,
246: My sight is peering blindly through the dark
247: Of her vast hair—a cavernous abyss
248: Of blackness traversed by mad shooting sparks
249: Or fearful gleams of blood.—What things she says!
250: “—Let this be as it were my bridal night,
251: If you doubt all the Past. I am yours now;
252: Take this for the beginning, and trust me;
253: I will be yours for ever,—not a look,
254: A word, a thought shall e'er dishonour you.”—
255: And, if I had not heard this very thing
256: Before, once, twice, innumerable times,
257: I should not plunge as I do now, my head
258: Still deeper in the fathomless dark hair,

259: And see tears falling from me—as it seems—
260: To fall on through a drear eternity.

261: But, hark, another voice! Whence comes it? —Whence?
262: From here, beneath the pillow; yes, 'tis harsh
263: And not like hers; but speaks a sweet thing—this:
264: I swear for Her it shall be so: trust Me!

265: Ah, yes—my Love, my own, I answer you;
266: I part with all the Past, forgive, deny,
267: Refuse to see it. All my soul is yours;
268: I never loved a moment in this world,
269: But what was love was wholly meant for you.
270: Yea, even before I saw you as you are,
271: Or knew your name, the vaguest breaths of love
272: Were but sent forward to me from the days
273: When you should come, preparing me for you.
274: I know in truth there never was a time
275: Wherein I saw no part of you—nor sign
276: To love you by; for all my sun, my light,
277: My flowers, my world would be the saddest blank,

278: The day you were not; you have these in you,
279: And are yourself in them; and, on the day
280: You go, you take them all away with you;
281: And so 'twas you I saw when I saw them
282: And said:—“That Lady mine shall have a head
283: Like yonder drooping lily on whose white
284: The summer's breath may never set a stain;
285: And She shall have a heaven for her hair
286: As deep, and dark, and splendid, as the one
287: I dream beneath; and She shall have such eyes
288: As ever seem to me those still blue lakes
289: I come on in the twilight of the woods
290: And find wide open under the thick fringe
291: Of violets—that fascinate me so
292: With gazing on me; yes, and, for her smile,
293: She shall but use that magic of the sun
294: That so transfigures all the day with light,
295: And gives my heart already such a thrill
296: As if She smiled at me:”—my Love, 'twas you
297: I saw then, dreamed of, waited for; 'twas you;
298: My heart attests it, looking on you now.—
299: So this of mine is such a perfect love

300: You see, it could not change nor turn away;—
301: It is the only love God made for you,
302: As you He made for me and from the first
303: Revealed to me. Therefore it cannot be
304: That you are false to me,—that I no way
305: Can save and keep you mine—you whom He gave
306: To me for ever, to be brought as mine
307: Before Him at the last. My precious one,
308: You are all worthy of me—are my crown
309: Untarnished, perfect, for you have not sinned;
310: 'Tis I have sinned,—not being strong at once
311: To save both pure in you. Did not your lips
312: Completely make you mine of your own will?
