Arthur O’Shaugnessy An Epic of Women VII. A TROTH FOR ETERNITY-1

1: —SO, Woman! I possess you. Yes, at length,
2: Once wholly and for ever you are mine!

3: That cursed burden on my memory,
4: Your whole past life's betrayal—let it go:
5: Ay, let it perish, and, for me at least,
6: Let life begin this moment, though we die
7: But three hours hence!

7: Is this your little voice
8: My Love, enthralling, winning my whole faith
9: With mere increasing sweetness in its tones,
10: Dissolving, exorcising, as it used,

11: Ah too infallibly, the phantom thing,
12: The doubt, the dread within me? ah, my Sweet,
13: Is this once more your voice assuring me—
14: With some rare music rather than one word
15: Of those fair whispered oaths of constancy;
16: Yea, till, as ever, I am come to smile
17: And glory in you, and believe you pure—
18: All mine, for ever, past a change in thought?

19: But no! It is the little voice of the Steel
20: Here safe against my breast and fairly hid:
21: The Steel is singing to me, very low,
22: A tender song entrancing me;—O joy!
23: The Steel says you will ne'er escape me more;
24: You will be true to me; you will be mine;
25: No man shall touch you after me; no face,
26: However strangely fair, shall have the art
27: To draw one look from you, to charm and rouse
28: That wondrous little snake of treachery
29: That was for ever lurking for me—sure
30: To spring upon me out of the least look
31: Or promise, safe to be curled up beneath

32: The simplest seeming offering in your hand.

33: Yes, 'tis a thing at length as good as this
34: The steel is singing to me: did you hear,
35: You should but love it—since it pleads so well
36: It makes me put whole faith in you once more.
37: For now three days and nights indeed—while I,
38: Contending for you with the love I gave
39: Against the curse I owed you, raged and thought
40: It was my madness—O this little voice
41: Was striving with me, singing all the time,
42: Upon a low sweet soothing tune, strange words
43: Of promise that seemed like the distant taunts
44: Of all my past beliefs, and that I sought
45: To cover with my curses; till, last night,
46: My soul grew faint with hearing them—how sweet,
47: How full of good they were. Then I fell still,
48: Yea, stunned, and with my head upon the ground;
49: And through the shut bleared darkness of my eyes,
50: I seemed to see the room about me lit
51: And fearful, and the Sword from off the wall
52: Unscabbarded before me in the midst,
53: Most terrible and living, and in light—

54: Just like a great archangel with the glare
55: Of burning expiations full on him.

56: O then my soul did call upon the Steel;
57: And the Steel heard and swore to me. My soul
58: Tore forth the hidden-rooted love of thee,
59: Thy treasured words—each one a cruel worm
60: That gnaws me through for ever, thy fair face
61: From the first inmost shrine, thy early kiss,
62: Thy separate falsenesses, all my despair,
63: My utter helplessness—and flung them down,
64: The very writhing entrails of my life
65: Become one inward horror to be borne
66: No longer. And there came about me, loud,
67: The mocking of a thousand impious tongues,
68: That seemed to clash and rattle hideously
69: From ancient hollow sepulchres of men
70: Long buried and forgotten; for my love
71: Their gibe was, for my faith, for my despair,
72: For my long blindness: and at last I knew,
73: And, understanding, called with a great voice
74: Upon the Steel: and the Steel heard me there,
75: And swore to me—for you and me and God!

76: Sing on, O little voice: She cannot hear;
77: There is a pact between us.

77: Now I stand
78: And feel her eyes' soft element within,
79: Upon, around me, melting away life
80: Into these few full throbbing moments.—Lo!
81: Her tears again—her disavowal clean
82: Of any thought of falseness. Lo! her words—
83: I might have lived beside her all these days
84: In perfect joy; words, blandishments and tears
85: Already staggering me with their old might
86: Of coiling fascinations; and one tear
87: A drop that, falling straight into my heart,
88: Fills it too full for speaking a long time
89: The ready thing of pardon and of love.

90: See! am I Lord here?—This fair sight of Her,
91: Working the whole impassioned prodigy
92: As 'twere of all her beauty, just to win
93: Me this time and, at any cost, be queen
94: Of this one present, as of many pasts—
95: Hath ever it been fairer, more complete?

96: Who else hath had her more and called her his
97: Than here I have her calling herself mine?
98: I would indeed he might draw near just now,
99: Yea, void of feigning, in some wonted way,
100: And feel a cold look from her plant him there
101: Outside the circle where this molten love
102: Of her whole smile is showered upon me,
103: And know her no more his now than mine then.

104: But what do I here with a thought like this?
